N60bn for Nigeria's Terror Victims Fund: Show Same Commitment For Chibok Girls, NGO Tells FG

By Blogger

LEADERSHIP Weekend — (Aug 2, 2014)

A Borno State based non-governmental organisation (NGO), Ambassadors for Peace, has urged the federal government of Nigeria to replicate the spirited commitment deployed in raising about N100 billion for victims of terrorism in Nigeria in the rescue of the Chibok schoolgirls.

The group which described President Goodluck Jonathan’s ability to coordinate the raising of such fund in one single event, as highly remarkable, however said such efforts could only be crystallised if more commitment is shown to the rescue of the 219 abducted Chibok girls still in the captivity of Boko Haram.

Speaking to LEADERSHIP Weekend in telephone interview the coordinaor of the group in Borno State, Ambassador Ahmed Shehu said just as Nigerians have that remarkable spirit of generating such funds from just a fragment of its illustrious populace, so does the country have the ability and might to help rescue the girls.

But he wondered why it is taking the federal government over 100 days to get the girls rescued.

“We know such an amount raised on Thursday in support of President Goodluck Jonathan’s N500 billion Appeal Fund initiative in support of victims of terrorism in Nigeria would also in a way impact on the lives of the parents of the abducted chiboks, the escapees and even those in captivity should they eventually gain their freedom by God’s grace, we still implore the federal government to put more effort and ensure that those girls should not spend more days in captivity”, said Ambassador Shehu.

He said the inability to rescue these girls when the federal government and its security agencies have repeatedly confirmed knowing where the girls are being kept remains a thing of bafflement not only to Nigerians but its global audience.

“We know the federal government has all it takes to rescue these girls; and we know that it could do it if more commitment is shown, so we cannot understand why these girls be allowed to remain with the insurgents when everyone knows how dangerous a day spent with them could be”, he added.

Ambassadors for Peace is an affiliate of Youth Federation for World Peace Nigeria, which is a global network of young ambassadors for peace.
