Nigeria Not Asking South Africa To Deploy troops in Nigeria.

The ministry of Defence, has yesterday faulted a newspaper report wrongly quoting the defence minister, Mansur Dan-Ali, to have said that South African forces would help Nigeria fight Boko Haram insurgents.  

The ministry said such information was misleading and untrue. 

This debunking was contained in a statement issued by Colonel Tukur Gusau,  the Public Relations Officer to the minister

"The attention of the Office of the Honourable Minister of Defence has been drawn to a misleading newspaper publication quoting the honourable minister, Mansur Muhammad Dan Ali, saying the South Africa would send Special Forces to help Nigeria in the fight against Boko Haram. 

"That report was totally misleading and false.

"The office of the Honorable Minister wants to unequivocally state that there was never a time that the Hon Minister of Defence had made such statement or alluded to it. 

"It is a fact that on Monday, March 7, 2016, the Honourable Minister had hosted his visiting counterpart, the Republic of South Africa’s Minister of Defence and Military Veterans Ms.Nobise Mapisa-Nqakula, and the Chief of South African National Defence Force General Shoke at the Ministry where they discussed bilateral security issues that would be of benefit to the two African nations. 

"It would be recalled that the Honourable Minister and his team were in South Africa last week

where the two countries launched a partnership initiative that  will led to the cementing of  MoU's on Defence Cooperation between the two great nations in African continent.

"During the Monday meeting at the Ship House, Ministry of Defence Abuja,  issues bothering on transfer of skills, technology, research and development were discussed.

Nigeria also recognised the expertise of South Africa in the area of training special forces for counter insurgency operations. Therefore Nigeria seek for  cooperation in the area of training and transfer of skills for own forces from South Africa National Defence Force.
