‘Safe Space’ Initiative Can Help Reduce Violent Extremism’

LEADERSHIP - Sep 25, 2015

Talking and discussing openly about issues of violence and terrorism in communities and religious places can go a long way to reduce cases of young minds getting radicalised easily, says Hoda Hawa, a Director of Policy and Advocacy, Muslim Public Affairs Council.

Tagged the Save Space, the USA-based Muslim Public Affairs Council said so far 12 states of America has bought into the initiative and is fast achieving the desired result among the muslim communities.

"Muslim communities or mosques should be able to open a space for young minds who want to understand what violent extremism is all about so that they can understand whether it is still logical or not to understand what Jihad really means for them", said Hawa.

Hawa who bared her minds on this issue while briefing journalists from 12 different countries who are on a Reporting Tour of USA on Countering Extreme Violence said even the perceived criminalising of discussions that justifies terrorism in mosques by Islamic clerics is even in itself a catalyst to the escalation of radicalising of young minds.

According to her, "Barring the discussion about extreme violence in mosques is to us a clue that if such issues are not being discussed in safe environment or in the mosques where people are going, then where are the young minds going to turn to for answers? They are definitely going to going to meet skewed minds; or go to the internet where they think they can find answers. That is why we have to discuss about CVE with open minds and honesty".

The US Foreign Media Centre is sponsoring journalists selected from 12 different countries cutting across Africa, Asia, Europe and Middles east to take a two weeks reporting tour of USA with a bit to understanding how America perceive and tackles the problem of extreme violence.

The tour group has been able to meet different non-governmental organisations based in Washington and Minnesota like the National Consortium for the Study of Terrorism and Responses to terrorism, the USAID, the Efforts being made by the various NGOs with the large Somali Community that are generally targeted toward preventing youth deradicalizing the youth that have recently been the toast of the ISIS.
