Some 25 villagers in a northeast Nigerian village of Buratai located in the southern Borno state were on Saturday shot dead by Boko Haram terrorists for refusing to heed to their earlier warnings not to participate in the electoral process.
The gunmen, according to witness, crept on the sleeping residents in the wee hours of Saturday and began to set their hours ablaze, while those smoked out were shot dead.
"A total number of 25 persons were killed by the Boko Haram gunmen and we have to bury them while the election was going on. We had earlier had a warning message passed through the rumor mails that they would come to attack us should we go ahead and support the election", said a resident, Mallam Ayuba.
Borno state governor, Mr Kashim Shettima also confirmed the incident even as he condemned the act he described as desperation of a weakened insurgents group.
Boko Haram leader, Abubakar Shekau had in his last video released in early February said elections would not hold even if all members of his group were killed.
