M Monguno town, barrack fall for Boko Haram as over 200 die in Maiduguri

By Blogger,

At least 200 dead bodies mostly of Boko Haram terrorists and some of the soldiers littered the battle ground at the outskirts of Maiduguri even as Monguno town (180km away) now falls under the control of the insurgents, security sources said.

An attack on Maiduguri came barely 24 hours after President Goodluck Jonathan made a campaign promise that his administration would soon crush Boko Haram, reclaim captured towns and free abducted Chibok girls.

Boko Haram terrorists began to attack Maiduguri coming from Dalwa area of Konduga local government at about 11:30pm  but met a stiff resistance from troops of the Nigerian army.

A security source said another batch of the attackers tried to assault Maiduguri from  another spot called Limanti yet the soldiers were there holding their grounds.

The faceoff dragged to early hours of Sunday when the insurgents in their large numbers decided to force their way into the state capital using the  major and only safe entry point.

A bloody faceoff ensued at Njimtilo village less than 20km away from Maiduguri along the Kano-Maiduguri highway where Nigerian forces engaged the terrorists from air and on the ground for hours.

More than 200 bodies littered the ground, and many other soldiers who survived sustained injuries.

While Maiduguri is now placed under a 24 hours curfew as military fears further attack, Monguno town was reported to have fallen for the Boko Haram after hours of battle.

Another fighting is being reported from Konduga town which is just 35km away from Maiduguri.

The attackers seem to be charging against the city from all angles.  Unconfirmed rumours suggest that the terrorists were spotted to be converging some where in Alagarno and around the suburbs of Jere.

The worst situation now is that the Boko Haram insurgents are now in total control of the entire northern Borno as well as about half of the Borno central. The major barracks in Baga, Bama and Monguno which informed the major government presence are now under the territory and conquest of the Boko Haram terrorists.
